The New MacBook Air M4: A Game-Changer for India?

Apple’s latest MacBook Air M4 has taken everyone by surprise, not just because of its powerful hardware but also its unexpectedly competitive pricing. Unlike previous models that often carried premium price tags, this new MacBook Air starts at around ₹89,000, with discounts bringing it down to ₹76,000. For a brand that rarely lowers its prices, this is a major shift, making high-end Apple hardware more accessible to a larger audience in India.

At first glance, the MacBook Air M4 may not seem drastically different from its predecessors. It retains the sleek, lightweight design that has made the Air lineup so popular, but there are subtle refinements. One noticeable change is the introduction of a new “Sky Blue” color, replacing the much-loved Space Gray. While the change might seem minor, it gives the laptop a fresh look while keeping the classic minimalist Apple aesthetic intact.

Beyond appearances, the MacBook Air M4 brings some solid hardware improvements. The biggest upgrade is the new M4 chip, which delivers significantly better performance than the previous M3 and even outperforms many high-end Windows laptops in the same price range. Built on a more efficient 3-nanometer process, it offers a combination of increased processing power and improved energy efficiency. The base model now includes 16GB of RAM, a move that enhances multitasking capabilities, although the 256GB storage remains a controversial limitation.

Apple has also improved the laptop’s webcam, integrating a 12MP sensor from the MacBook Pros. This means clearer video calls, along with Center Stage, which keeps users centered in the frame automatically. The speakers remain one of the best in this category, delivering loud and clear audio with Dolby Atmos support. Another notable addition is support for dual external displays, a long-awaited feature for MacBook Air users.

Battery life remains a strong point, with Apple claiming up to 18 hours of usage. Real-world testing suggests around 10 to 12 hours on typical usage, which is still impressive. The laptop supports faster charging when using a 70W PD charger, though the standard 30W adapter is included in the box.

Despite its strengths, the MacBook Air M4 isn’t without its flaws. The display remains a 60Hz IPS panel, which, while high-quality, falls short of the OLED screens and higher refresh rates available in competing Windows laptops. Additionally, the base 256GB storage uses a slower SSD, and upgrading to a 512GB variant costs significantly more. These are the trade-offs users need to consider when choosing between the MacBook and its alternatives.

For those who prioritize reliability, longevity, and a seamless user experience, the MacBook Air M4 stands out as one of the best value-for-money options in its segment. It offers a balance of performance, battery life, and premium design that few laptops can match. While it may not be perfect, its lower price makes it a significant win for Indian consumers looking for an entry into the Apple ecosystem without breaking the bank.
