The leaks about One UI 8 are not slowing down. We now have a new update for One UI 8, running on the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Let’s dive in and see what’s new.
New Update Running on Galaxy Z Flip 6
This latest build is running on the Galaxy Z Flip 6. There are also other versions for different devices like the Fold 6, but today, we will focus only on the Flip 6 because that’s what I have.
First, when checking the software information, it shows the April security patch and the May Google Play system update. It’s exciting to see that One UI 8 is based on Android 16.
New Weather App With Real-Life Animations
One big change is in the Weather app. When tapping the weather widget, it now opens with new animations. These animations look more real compared to the older, cartoonish style in One UI 7. It now shows things like beaches and real pictures, giving it a much better look.
While most of the Weather app looks the same when you scroll, this updated design feels more modern.
Bugs Found in This Early Build
Since this is not the final version, a few bugs are showing up.
One issue is with the Now Brief widget. Before, it worked fine, but now it shows a blank widget and clicking it does nothing. Even reinstalling the widget doesn’t fix it.
Also, the Clock Stopwatch feature is broken in live notifications and on the Now Bar. Again, these problems are normal because this is an internal test build, not even ready for beta users yet.
Small Change in Settings Menu Swipe
Another new thing is in the Settings menu swipe gesture.
In One UI 7, when you swiped back, the screen would freeze until you released your finger. In One UI 8, the screen moves along with your finger when you swipe back, giving a smoother feel.
However, no matter which side you swipe from, the animation always comes from the same side, which might change later.
Problems With Now Brief on Cover Screen
In the earlier version, the Now Brief would work on the Flip’s cover screen. When the Flip was closed, you could double-tap it, and it would show Now Brief, then ask you to open the phone for more details.
But now, in this build, the Now Brief feature is broken, and it doesn’t show up at all on the cover screen.
Record Log Video From the Cover Screen
There’s a cool feature that was missed before: You can now record log video directly from the Flip’s cover screen.
This means you can capture high-quality selfie videos in log format, giving you more control over color correction later. It’s a big plus for video lovers.
New Volume Panel at the Bottom
Another change is with the volume control panel.
Instead of appearing at the side like before, the volume panel now shows up at the bottom of the screen.
This might make it easier for one-handed use, but it can feel strange because you now need to move your thumb lower to change the volume.
Right now, you can’t expand this volume panel to control different volumes like media, notifications, or calls separately. It seems unfinished, as the panel is even cut off slightly on the side. It might not be fully optimized for the Flip’s narrow screen yet.
I tried using Good Lock’s Sound Assistant to adjust the volume panel, but it didn’t fix it. This suggests the new volume panel is still very much under testing.
Final Thoughts
Even though there are some bugs and unfinished parts, it’s exciting to see the new ideas Samsung is trying with One UI 8.
From real-life weather animations to new gestures and features like log video recording on the cover screen, the future looks promising.
There will be more updates and changes as new builds come out. Stay tuned for a full review of what Samsung could have done better with One UI 7 and the big plans for One UI 8.
