iPhone 17: Everything You Need to Know Before the Big Launch

The buzz around Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 is already building, and it’s no surprise that fans are eagerly waiting for its arrival. Many are eyeing the iPhone 17 not just to get their hands on the latest model, but also because its release will likely bring a price drop for the iPhone 16, which has been a best-seller globally. So, when can we expect to see the iPhone 17 lineup? Based on the current cycle, Apple is expected to launch the full iPhone 17 lineup in September. However, this time, Apple has made some bold decisions with its lineup. Notably, the iPhone 17 Plus has been dropped due to underwhelming sales, making room for a new model: the iPhone 17 Air.

The iPhone 17 Air is set to be the slimmest iPhone yet, measuring just 5.5mm thick. Apple is taking a bold step by removing the SIM card slot entirely, focusing solely on eSIM support. But what’s really intriguing is the Air’s single-camera setup. It remains to be seen whether Apple can convince buyers to adopt a single-camera iPhone again. Apple is also skipping silicon-carbon batteries, leaving questions about battery life. However, rumors hint at a smart battery pack option that could extend usage, though its durability and performance are still untested.

Moving on to displays, all iPhone 17 models are finally getting 120Hz LTPO displays, marking a long-awaited upgrade for the base models. The standard iPhone 17 is expected to have a 6.3-inch screen, while the larger models could feature 6.5-inch displays. The Pro and Pro Max models will continue with titanium builds, while regular models may stick with aluminum. As for cameras, the base iPhone 17 will feature a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The 17 Air will have just a 48MP main sensor. The Pro and Pro Max models will boast a triple-camera system with 48MP sensors, an ultrawide lens, and a tetraprism zoom lens offering 10x lossless zoom. Apple is also aiming to support 8K video recording in the Pro models.

AI is a big focus this year. Apple teased its AI features last year, and now, the iPhone 17 will integrate AI into more aspects of the system. Still, it’s worth noting that Android devices, like Google’s Pixel phones, have been ahead in this space with features like Nano Galaxy AI. On the hardware side, Apple is working on its own 5G modem, expected in the iPhone 17. However, the performance of Apple’s 5G chips has yet to match Qualcomm’s, and there’s speculation that Apple’s modems might not support millimeter-wave 5G, which is still primarily used in the U.S.

The iPhone 17 lineup will also feature the latest A19 and A19 Pro chips, built on TSMC’s advanced process. These chips promise improved performance and efficiency, but Apple’s competition isn’t standing still—Qualcomm and MediaTek are also preparing next-gen processors that could rival Apple’s offerings.

One thing’s for sure: iPhone 17 will be more expensive than ever, as Apple plans to manufacture them in India while exporting globally. Prices are expected to be higher in both the U.S. and India, continuing Apple’s trend of premium pricing without necessarily adding groundbreaking features. Apple might also introduce new color options, like blue for the Pro and Pro Max models, and a refreshed camera layout. There’s even a hint that the dynamic island on the Pro Max could shrink slightly.

Looking ahead, don’t expect a major iPhone redesign until 2027, marking 20 years since the original iPhone’s launch. Apple tends to make significant design overhauls every 10 years—think the iPhone X in 2017. Until then, expect incremental updates with each release.

For now, the most exciting update for the iPhone 17 might just be the 120Hz display on the base model—a feature long overdue. Still, keep an eye on pricing: a steep jump could mean the iPhone 16’s price won’t drop as much as expected. Ultimately, the decision is yours—stick with the tried-and-true iPhone 16, wait for the iPhone 17, or explore Android alternatives.

Let’s see what Apple brings to the table this year!
