The new mid-range contender from Google has arrived β the Pixel 9a. Each year, the Pixel A series gets better, and this latest release may be the most impressive yet. With upgraded features, refined design, and Google’s signature user experience, the Pixel 9a could easily be one of the best value smartphones of the year.
Sleek Design with a Fresh Look
The Pixel 9a takes a step away from the familiar visor-like camera bump found on previous Pixel models. Instead, its dual cameras are flush with the back panel, offering a flatter and more uniform design. The matte plastic back meets a sharp-edged aluminum frame, giving the phone a lightweight and comfortable feel in hand.
One key upgrade this year is the inclusion of IP68-rated water and dust resistance β a feature previously reserved for more premium Pixel models.
Larger, Brighter Display
This year, the display size has grown to 6.3 inches, matching the regular Pixel 9. Itβs an OLED panel with Full HD+ resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The brightness is impressive, reaching 1250 nits manually and boosting up to 1900 nits in auto mode, making it easy to see even in bright outdoor environments.
While the bezels are slightly thicker than those on flagship Pixels, the screen remains sharp, colorful, and smooth thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate. It can also scale down to 60Hz to help conserve battery life.
Audio and Biometrics
The Pixel 9a features stereo speakers that produce decent sound with clean mids, though bass and highs are less prominent. For security, thereβs an under-display optical fingerprint scanner that’s fast and reliable.
Storage options include 128GB or 256GB, though thereβs no microSD expansion.
Clean Android Experience with Pixel Touches
Running on Android 15 out of the box, the Pixel 9a delivers a clean and intuitive software experience, complete with exclusive Google features. Users can enjoy smooth performance and a user-friendly interface, consistent with Googleβs software philosophy.
Long-Term Software Support
Google promises seven years of software updates for the Pixel 9a, making it a standout in the mid-range segment for longevity and security.
Performance and Thermals
Under the hood, the Pixel 9a runs on Googleβs Tensor G4 chipset β the same one found in the flagship models. While it doesnβt quite match the performance of high-end Snapdragon processors in benchmarks, day-to-day performance remains smooth and responsive.
Gaming also holds up well, with minimal slowdowns and excellent thermal management. Unlike some previous Pixel models, the 9a avoids excessive heat buildup, maintaining consistent performance during extended use.
Bigger Battery, Faster Charging
The Pixel 9a packs a larger 5100 mAh battery this year, resulting in impressive battery life. In testing, it scored a solid 12 hours and 30 minutes of active use time.
Charging has also improved, jumping from 18W to 23W, although itβs still slower than some competitors. A 30-minute charge brings the battery to 47%, and a full charge takes about 1 hour and 41 minutes. Wireless charging support is also included β a welcome addition.
Camera Upgrades with Reliable Results
The Pixel 9a introduces a new 48MP main camera paired with last yearβs ultrawide lens. Despite lacking some advanced controls seen in higher-end Pixels, the camera still shines. The main sensor captures detailed, natural-looking shots with excellent color accuracy.
Portrait mode works well, with default zoom presets of 1.5x and 2x. Skin tones and background separation are handled expertly. Digital zoom holds up nicely, even at 2x.
The main camera can also double as a macro shooter thanks to its close focusing distance. Simply bring the phone close to a subject, and it automatically switches to capture detailed macro shots.
Night Photography
Night mode kicks in automatically and produces sharp, well-lit photos with minimal noise. Color reproduction is strong, and both shadows and highlights are well balanced.
The ultrawide camera performs well during the day, though sharpness drops toward the edges. At night, image softness is noticeable, though turning on night mode helps improve sharpness and dynamic range.
Selfies and Video
The front-facing 13MP camera produces 12MP images with natural skin tones and good detail. While it has fixed focus, the focal range is forgiving enough for most use cases.
Video recording is available in 4K on all three cameras, but only the main camera supports 60fps. Main cam videos look good with accurate colors and solid dynamic range, though a bit soft. Ultrawide video suffers from visible noise, even in daylight. However, video stabilization is excellent across the board.
