The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has gone from being a predictable upgrade to a device that might just break records. What started as a safe refresh now appears to be a full-blown engineering flex — and we’ve got all the juicy details.
A Sudden Shift in Design
A few months ago, early leaks showed the Z Fold 7 looking almost identical to the Fold 6. The renders suggested only minor changes, leading many to expect a routine upgrade. But fast forward to today, and it seems Samsung had a serious change of heart.
Let’s talk thickness — a big talking point this year.
Initially, leaker @OnLeaks revealed the Fold 7 would measure 9.5mm when folded — already a massive improvement over the Fold 6’s 12.2mm. A nearly 3mm reduction on a foldable? Impressive.
But then came Techmaniacs, a source with a solid track record, dropping an even bolder claim: the Z Fold 7 could come in at just 8.2mm thick when folded.
That’s the same thickness as the Galaxy S25 Ultra, a phone that doesn’t fold. For context, that’s a 4mm drop from last year’s Fold and exactly half the thickness of the original Galaxy Fold from 2019. Yes, we’ve reached a point where foldables are now as thin as slab phones.
Right now, the thinnest foldable on record is the Oppo Find N5 at 8.9mm. If this leak holds true, the Z Fold 7 would smash that record by 0.7mm.
What About the Unfolded Thickness?
Techmaniacs didn’t specify, but logic suggests around 4.1mm when unfolded — roughly the thickness of a USB-C port. Anything thinner would start bumping up against the limits of physical design unless Samsung plans to ditch the port altogether (which would probably cause chaos).
Wait, Can We Trust This?
Good question. Why is there such a massive difference between earlier leaks and this new report?
Both sources are reputable — OnLeaks is legendary for render leaks, while Techmaniacs has solid internal sources. So what gives?
Well, Samsung might’ve made a last-minute design change. Something similar happened with the S25 Edge — originally considered the final design, until leaks about the iPhone 17 Air surfaced. Samsung then pivoted, trimming the phone down and reworking the camera module.
It’s very possible they’ve done the same here. The Fold 7 hasn’t hit production yet, so late-stage overhauls are entirely plausible. Of course, there’s still a chance one of these sources is off, but we’ll find out soon enough.
Confirmed Upgrades Beyond the Thinness
Aside from the record-setting design, we’ve got some confirmed upgrades to look forward to.
-
Wider outer display – Finally, the cover screen will feel more like a regular phone.
-
200MP main camera – Borrowed straight from the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
-
Improved under-display selfie cam – For a cleaner look and better performance.
-
Display crease nearly invisible – Samsung seems to be solving one of the foldable’s most annoying problems.
S Pen Revamp
The S Pen is also getting a serious overhaul. It now works similarly to the Apple Pencil, meaning you’ll need to charge it even for basic functions like writing. A polarizing move, for sure.
Battery capacity on the phone itself is staying the same though, which feels like a missed opportunity given all these other changes.
Software & AI
The Z Fold 7 will launch with Android 16 and One UI 8 right out of the box. And, unsurprisingly, Samsung is planning to integrate Galaxy AI features. What those will include is still under wraps for now.
Bonus: Samsung’s Foldable Future
On top of the Fold 7 hype, Samsung just confirmed something even bigger — literally.
The long-rumored Galaxy Tri-Fold (aka “Galaxy G-Fold”) is coming later this year. It’s designed to unfold into a 10-inch tablet, essentially turning your phone into a full-sized tablet in your pocket.
We’ll probably get a sneak peek at the Galaxy Unpacked event in July, though don’t expect to buy it right away. Samsung is aiming for a limited release later in the year.
Oh, and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic fans — you’re in for a treat too. A redesigned model is also coming in July, marking the Classic’s big return.
Final Thoughts
Samsung might have taken its time perfecting the Galaxy Z Fold line, but with the Fold 7, it looks like they’re about to make history. Between the ultra-thin form factor, serious camera upgrades, and new AI features, this could be the foldable that turns heads — and breaks records.
Stay tuned. Things are about to get exciting.
