When I first pulled the Asus Zenbook A14 out of the box, I had to double-check that it was a real, working laptop. It felt so light, I genuinely thought it might be a hollow demo unit. But no—this is the real deal. Weighing just 870 grams, it’s the lightest laptop I’ve ever tested in the studio. And despite its featherweight build, it delivers solid performance, all-day battery life, and starts at a very reasonable $899.
Exceptionally Light and Well-Built
In today’s competitive thin-and-light laptop market, most devices in this class hover around 1.2 to 1.3 kilograms. That weight usually comes from trying to pack in a larger battery or more powerful internals. The Zenbook A14 breaks the mold with its 870g chassis—roughly 35% lighter than the average competitor.
Asus achieves this by using magnesium alloy across every external panel—the keyboard deck, bottom, and lid. Not only does this shave off a ton of weight, but it also adds strength and durability. Everything is coated in what Asus calls ceramic polymer, giving it a stonelike finish that resists fingerprints and feels premium in hand. It comes in a sleek gray, but there’s also a sandy beige version available.
When we weighed the three main panels combined, they came in at just 258 grams. Add in a compact motherboard, lightweight heatsink, and other carefully engineered internals, and the result is a laptop that feels almost unreal in how light it is—without compromising on structure. It even passes the one-hand opening test, which is usually tricky for ultra-light devices.
Snapdragon Power and Everyday Performance
The base model features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus chip, an 8-core processor that delivers reliable performance for day-to-day tasks. While there are higher-tier configurations with the X Elite chip, the base model will be more than enough for most users. Whether it’s multitasking, media streaming, or some light gaming, it handles everything smoothly.
Just don’t expect to run AAA games at high settings—this isn’t a gaming machine. But casual titles and basic creative workloads are very doable.
Display Quality and the Missed Touchscreen
You’re getting a 14-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1920×1200. The screen is bright, vibrant, and color-accurate, but capped at 60Hz refresh rate. That’s fair for the price, but what’s more disappointing is the lack of a touchscreen.
Given how lightweight and portable this laptop is, a touchscreen would’ve added a lot to the user experience. This is the kind of device you’d want to carry around, use in bed, or on the go. Tapping the screen naturally feels like it should be an option—but unfortunately, it’s not.
Innovative Cooling and Great Battery Life
The Zenbook A14 features a unique dual-fan setup. One fan handles the usual task of cooling the heatsink and pushing hot air out the back. The second fan, however, is designed to circulate air across internal components without any exhaust vent. It just keeps things cool and quiet from the inside.
This thermal design, paired with the energy-efficient Snapdragon chip, results in excellent battery life. We’re in an era where long-lasting laptops are becoming the norm, but this one still stands out with how quiet and efficient it is.
Keyboard Experience and Port Selection
Typing on the Zenbook A14 feels generally comfortable, although I did notice the keys were a bit slick. Asus has used a fingerprint-resistant coating on the keyboard, which does its job well—but also makes the keys feel smoother than I’d like. It’s still a solid typing experience, just not as grippy as traditional keycaps.
As for ports, you get one USB-A port on the right, and two USB-C ports on the left. While this is functional, a bit more versatility would have been appreciated—especially USB-C ports on both sides, so you can charge from either direction.
Final Verdict – Lightweight, Well-Priced, and Almost Perfect
The Asus Zenbook A14 offers a compelling package for those who want a light and portable machine without sacrificing performance. Its launch price of $899 is fair—not jaw-droppingly cheap, but still reasonable considering what you get. And with discounts likely to bring it down to $799 or even $699, it becomes an outstanding value.
Sure, there are some trade-offs—the lack of touchscreen, limited ports—but those feel minor when you hold a laptop this light that still feels premium, solid, and capable.
If you’re in the market for a reliable, ultra-light laptop that won’t weigh down your bag—or your wallet—the Zenbook A14 is absolutely worth a look.
