Android fans have a lot to be excited about. Google is preparing a major update that brings a fresh new look and exciting features to Android. The next version, Android 16, is set to change how Android feels and looks with a bold design and smoother animations.
Recently, Google accidentally leaked a blog post revealing details about its new design language, spotted by 9to5Google. The post showed how Android’s Material You design is evolving into something called Material 3 Expressive. Don’t be fooled by the name—this new style is bold, colorful, and dynamic. It’s like Material You, but more vibrant and creative.
The leaked blog post shared examples of how different Google apps will look with this new design. For example, the YouTube Music app concept shows brighter colors and bigger shapes, reminding us of the classic Windows Phone style. Another example is the Gmail compose screen, which now looks cleaner, with a bigger send button and fewer distractions.
Other apps are also getting this makeover. The Clock app now shows bold new elements in alarms, timers, and the stopwatch. Google Keep will have a redesigned search bar and new filter buttons. Even apps like Google Chat already show signs of the new floating toolbar, giving a more modern, minimal look.
But that’s not all. Another leak from Android 16 Beta 4 shows a different style altogether. This version features blurred backgrounds in quick settings, notifications, and the app drawer. It’s a big shift from solid colors to a softer, layered look. The status bar icons are also changing, with new colored battery icons. The volume panel is getting slimmer sliders, and the Settings app is adding colorful icons and new menu arrows to indicate subpages.
There are also new animations to match the fresh look. For example, when you swipe a notification, it needs a stronger swipe to remove it, helping avoid accidental swipes. There’s a bouncy animation when you open recent apps, and a fun squeeze effect when you press the power button.
Beyond visuals, Android 16 brings powerful new features. One is the ability to turn any app into a floating window, making multitasking easier. A desktop mode like Samsung DeX is also coming, letting you resize windows and use a taskbar for a full desktop experience.
Another important addition is Advanced Protection Mode, which combines security features into one place. This lets you turn on multiple security settings at once, giving more control and safety on your device.
These changes show that Google is serious about improving Android’s core experience. Android hasn’t changed much visually in recent years, but this update is a big step forward. Google plans to reveal more at its dedicated Android event on May 13, where we expect to see the new design, features, and improvements in action.
Android fans should stay tuned—it’s clear Android 16 will be one of the most exciting updates in years.
